For first-time visitors, Central Delhi around Connaught Place is the easiest base: it sits on the Yellow and Blue metro lines, puts you fifteen minutes from Old Delhi and twenty from Humayun's Tomb, and has the widest spread of rates. Paharganj, just west of New Delhi Railway Station, is where the backpacker guesthouses cluster and where rooms are cheapest. For quieter streets and closer access to Lodhi Gardens, Khan Market and the Nizamuddin dargah, look at Sunder Nagar, Jor Bagh or Nizamuddin East; South Delhi neighbourhoods like Hauz Khas, Saket and Aerocity trade central location for newer buildings and, in Aerocity's case, a five-minute ride to Terminal 3.
October to March is the season worth planning around — days sit between 15 and 25°C and the sky is usually clear, though late October to early November brings the post-monsoon smog and Diwali crowds that push rates up sharply. December and early January are peak, with the Republic Day build-up around 26 January filling central hotels; the Qawwali nights at Nizamuddin on Thursdays run year-round and lift demand in that pocket. April warms fast, May and June routinely pass 42°C, and the July-September monsoon is the cheapest window if you can handle the humidity.
Budget rooms in Paharganj start around ₹800–1,500, clean mid-range doubles in Karol Bagh or Connaught Place run ₹3,500–7,000, and the heritage and five-star properties in Lutyens' Delhi or Aerocity sit at ₹12,000–35,000 and up. The Delhi Metro is the fastest way across the city — a single fare tops out at ₹60 — and the Airport Express from IGI to New Delhi station takes 20 minutes for ₹60. Autos and Uber/Ola cover the gaps; insist on the meter or book on the app, and allow an hour in traffic for anything crossing between North and South Delhi in the evening.
