Patiala es lo que parecía Punjab antes del boom industrial: una ciudad principesca con patrimonio de verdad que aún se vive, no restaurado para turistas. El complejo del Qila Mubarak, en la ciudad vieja, es realmente impresionante, aunque la mitad está en lenta restauración. La ciudad es famosa por el Patiala peg (una medida de whisky de unos 120 ml; ve al restaurante de los Baradari Gardens a probar uno servido legalmente), el corte de salwar Patiala y las trenzas paranda que se venden en Adalat Bazaar. Sheesh Mahal y Moti Bagh Palace merecen 2 horas entre ambos.

Things to do in Patiala
Enter via the main gate on Qila Chowk in the old city. ₹25 entry, open 9am-5pm. The Darbar Hall and armoury sections are the highlights — swords attributed to Nadir Shah and Guru Gobind Singh sit in the arms collection. Some rooms are locked — ask the caretaker and tip ₹50. Allow 90 minutes; the painted Qila Androon rooms are the ones worth pushing for.
Old Moti Bagh Palace complex — the mirror palace and hanging bridge are on the same ₹25 ticket. Open 10am-5pm, closed Mondays. Combine with the medals gallery next door, billed as the largest collection of medals in India, which also holds original royal jewels. It is 2 km from Qila Chowk, ₹60-80 by auto, and there is shade by the tank.
Historic bazaar behind Qila Mubarak — parandi (braided hair tassels) ₹250-700, Patiala salwar ₹1,000-2,500, jutti ₹800-2,000. Fixed-price shops are honest; bargaining shops start at double. Cash preferred, though most now take UPI. Sarafa Bazaar for silver and Dharampura Bazaar for fabric run off the same lanes; shutters start coming down around 8.30pm.
Colonial-era gardens on Mall Road just outside Sheranwala Gate, 15 minutes' walk from Qila Chowk. Order an official Patiala peg (~120ml, ₹500) at the heritage restaurant inside. Gardens open dawn to dusk, free. Restaurant lunch and dinner only. Morning walkers own the lawns until about 8am, which is the nicest hour to see the rose beds.
Patiala's main Sikh shrine, on Dukhniwaran Sahib Road about 2 km from the old city, built where Guru Tegh Bahadur is said to have stopped at the village of Lehal. Open 24 hours, no entry fee, free shoe deposit and head covering at the gate. Langar is served continuously. Busiest on Panchmi, when queues form at the sarovar from early morning.
Built in 1936 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh beside Baradari Gardens on Mall Road, with the older Raj Rajeshwari shrine in the same compound. Open roughly 5am to 10pm, free, no cameras inside the sanctum. Navratri in spring and autumn turns the road into a fair with sweet stalls and queues past the gate — go at 7am or skip those fortnights.

Getting around Patiala
