Where to stay in Punjab: Amritsar, Chandigarh or somewhere quieter
Most first-time visitors stay in Amritsar, within 2 km of the Golden Temple, because that is what they came for and rooms in the walled city start around ₹1,500 a night. Chandigarh and neighbouring Mohali are the business base — Sector 17, Sector 35 and the IT park in Mohali have the newer 4- and 5-star properties, typically ₹4,500–9,000, and are the sensible choice if you are flying into Chandigarh airport. Ludhiana and Jalandhar are industrial cities used mainly by trade visitors; expect functional business hotels on Ferozepur Road or GT Road at ₹2,500–5,000.
For heritage stays, Patiala and Kapurthala have converted royal properties like Neemrana’s Baradari Palace and the Kanjli area guesthouses, usually ₹6,000–12,000. Anandpur Sahib and Fatehgarh Sahib suit Sikh heritage circuits, Pathankot is a transit stop for Dharamshala, and border-town options in Firozpur, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot, Bathinda, Sangrur, Barnala, Moga, Hoshiarpur, Batala, Nangal and Rupnagar are budget-only, generally under ₹2,000, and worth booking only if you have a specific reason to be there.
Best time to visit Punjab, month by month
October to March is the season. November and December are cold — Amritsar drops to 4–6°C at dawn and fog closes the GT Road and delays Shatabdi trains — but hotel demand peaks around Guru Nanak Jayanti in November and Lohri on 13 January, when Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib rates jump 40–60%. February and March are the sweet spot: 12–25°C, clear skies, and mid-range hotels back to ₹2,500–4,000.
April brings Baisakhi on 13 April, filling Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Amritsar for three or four nights. May and June are 42–46°C and genuinely unpleasant, which is why rates drop 30–40% and you can get a 5-star in Chandigarh for ₹4,000. Monsoon runs July to mid-September; it is humid but bookable, and Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib in March is the other date to plan around or avoid.
Getting around Punjab: train, car or bus
Punjab is compact and the trains are good, so a car is optional for most trips. The Delhi–Amritsar Shatabdi covers the spine — Ambala, Chandigarh (via a branch), Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar — in 6 hours, and the Vande Bharat does it in about 5:20. Amritsar to Ludhiana is 140 km and roughly 2 hours by train; Chandigarh to Amritsar is 230 km and about 4 hours by road on the four-lane NH44.
You need a car for the heritage circuit: Patiala–Fatehgarh Sahib–Anandpur Sahib–Kapurthala is a loop the trains do not serve well. Reckon on ₹12–15 per km with driver, or ₹3,500–4,500 a day for a Dzire including fuel. Punjab Roadways and PRTC buses cover every town on the list but are slow — Bathinda to Amritsar is 5 hours by bus versus 3 by car — and Ola/Uber only work reliably in Chandigarh, Mohali, Ludhiana and Amritsar.
