Pathankot es donde termina la llanura. Es una ciudad militar estratégica en la esquina de Punjab, J&K y Himachal: todo el que conduce a Dharamshala, Dalhousie o Jammu pasa por aquí, y la estación de tren es donde arranca el tren de juguete a Kangra. Por sí sola la ciudad es más funcional que bonita, pero si vas de paso tiene sentido pasar la noche en lugar de continuar cansado hacia las montañas. La presa de Ranjit Sagar está a 30 minutos y es genuinamente escénica; el templo Mukteshwar tiene un santuario real en una cueva.
A las 21:00 Dhangu Road y el mercado principal se van apagando, pero los dhabas de camioneros en la autopista siguen abiertos hasta pasada medianoche: el tramo hacia Jammu tiene el mejor cordero de Punjab. Sáltate esperar monumentos o patrimonio: es una ciudad fronteriza en activo. Va bien para: pernoctar antes de Dharamshala/Dalhousie, familias militares, quienes cambian de tren. Sáltala si tu itinerario es solo Punjab sin las montañas: no hay motivo para pasar por aquí.
Dhangu Road y la zona alrededor de la estación de tren tienen hoteles de gama media 35-70 $: Cliff Top Club y Country Inn son los fiables. El tramo de autopista hacia las montañas (lado de Chakki Bank) tiene opciones más nuevas 45-80 $ con aparcamiento más fácil. Hoteles económicos cerca de la estación de autobuses desde 18 $, pero ruidosos. Evita las pensiones muy baratas alrededor de los andenes: sobre todo tráfico de tránsito. No hay lujo: si lo necesitas, ve a Dharamshala o Amritsar.

35km from town on the Ravi river — massive reservoir with mountains behind. ₹50 entry to the viewpoint park. Boat rides ₹250. Best late afternoon. Combine with Shahpur Kandi Fort ruins 5km further.
Cave shrine to Shiva about 20km from the city, on a hill. Free entry, open 5am-8pm. The cave itself is small and can only fit one worshipper at a time. Best visited on a Monday.
Ancient Shiva temple at the confluence of Beas and Choch rivers, 35km southwest. ₹25 entry. The lingam is split naturally into two halves — Shiva and Parvati per legend. Priests will guide you.
Actually 25km inside Himachal on the way to Dharamshala — Mughal-era ruined fort. Free, open dawn to dusk. Combine with the Brij Raj Swami temple in the fort courtyard. Add 90 minutes.
Riverside fort ruins on the Ravi, 5km past the Ranjit Sagar Dam viewpoint on the same road, dating to the 16th century. Free entry, open dawn to dusk, no ticket booth. Genuinely ruined rather than rebuilt — bring water, no stalls nearby.
Narrow-gauge train from Pathankot to Kangra or on to Jogindernagar, boarding at the separate toy-train station near the main junction. Around ₹30-60 for an unreserved seat, first train leaves early morning. Slow (6-8 hours to Kangra) but the views past Nurpur are worth doing one-way rather than as a round trip.

Getting around Pathankot
El aeropuerto de Pathankot (lado Punjab, 8 km) tiene vuelos limitados: la mayoría vuela a Amritsar (105 km) o Jammu (100 km) y luego taxi. Pathankot Junction es un gran nodo ferroviario: Delhi 8-10 horas ~14 $, Amritsar 3 horas ~6 $. Pathankot Cantt es una estación aparte, a 5 km del Junction, usada por algunos trenes con destino Jammu. Sí, si llegas en tren: de Pathankot Junction a Dharamshala hay 90 km, 2,5 horas en taxi. El tren de juguete de Pathankot a Kangra (6-8 horas) es escénico pero lento. Si conduces desde Delhi, ir vía Chandigarh-Kiratpur es más rápido. Desde Amritsar, definitivamente ve por Pathankot.
Para turistas, totalmente segura. Es un acantonamiento militar con mucha seguridad. El incidente de 2016 en la base aérea fue una anomalía, no un patrón. Precauciones estándar: no fotografíes instalaciones militares, no te metas en zonas restringidas, lleva el DNI encima. Los locales están acostumbrados a viajeros de paso.
