Pathankot

35km from town on the Ravi river — massive reservoir with mountains behind. ₹50 entry to the viewpoint park. Boat rides ₹250. Best late afternoon. Combine with Shahpur Kandi Fort ruins 5km further.

Cave shrine to Shiva about 20km from the city, on a hill. Free entry, open 5am-8pm. The cave itself is small and can only fit one worshipper at a time. Best visited on a Monday.

Ancient Shiva temple at the confluence of Beas and Choch rivers, 35km southwest. ₹25 entry. The lingam is split naturally into two halves — Shiva and Parvati per legend. Priests will guide you.

Actually 25km inside Himachal on the way to Dharamshala — Mughal-era ruined fort. Free, open dawn to dusk. Combine with the Brij Raj Swami temple in the fort courtyard. Add 90 minutes.

Riverside fort ruins on the Ravi, 5km past the Ranjit Sagar Dam viewpoint on the same road, dating to the 16th century. Free entry, open dawn to dusk, no ticket booth. Genuinely ruined rather than rebuilt — bring water, no stalls nearby.

Narrow-gauge train from Pathankot to Kangra or on to Jogindernagar, boarding at the separate toy-train station near the main junction. Around ₹30-60 for an unreserved seat, first train leaves early morning. Slow (6-8 hours to Kangra) but the views past Nurpur are worth doing one-way rather than as a round trip.

Pathankot Airport (Punjab side, 8km) has limited flights — most fly into Amritsar (105km) or Jammu (100km) then taxi. Pathankot Junction is a major railway node — Delhi 8-10 hours ~₹1,150, Amritsar 3 hours ~₹500. Pathankot Cantt station is a separate stop, 5km from Junction, used by some Jammu-bound trains. Autos inside town ₹80-250. Taxis to Dharamshala ₹2,500-3,700, to Dalhousie ₹2,900-4,100, negotiate at the taxi stand near the junction. From Pathankot Airport, a prepaid taxi into town runs about ₹300-400 and takes 15-20 minutes; there's no city bus link, so a taxi or auto is the only realistic option. Local buses toward Jammu and toward the Himachal border leave from the main bus stand roughly every 30-40 minutes through the day.

Yes if you’re coming by train — Pathankot Junction to Dharamshala is 90km, 2.5 hours by taxi. The toy train from Pathankot to Kangra (6-8 hours) is scenic but slow. If you’re driving from Delhi, going via Chandigarh-Kiratpur is faster. From Amritsar, definitely route through Pathankot.

For tourists, completely safe. It's an army cantonment with heavy security. The 2016 airbase incident was an anomaly, not a pattern. Standard precautions apply — don’t photograph military installations, don’t wander into restricted zones, keep ID with you. Locals are used to travelers passing through.

A single day is enough to cover Ranjit Sagar Dam and Shahpur Kandi Fort in the morning, then Mukteshwar Mahadev temple or Kathgarh Mandir in the afternoon, both under 40km from the town centre. Add the Old Pathankot Bazaar walk in the evening for food. Trying to fit in Nurpur Fort as well makes for a long day since it's already inside Himachal Pradesh.

Hotels around the railway junction on Dhangu Road are the obvious choice if you have an early train, since most are a five-to-ten-minute auto ride from the platforms. The highway-side hotels toward Chakki Bank are quieter but add 15-20 minutes to the journey, so factor that in if your train leaves before 6am.
