Why people stay in Pathankot
Pathankot is where the plains end. It's a strategic army town at the corner of Punjab, J&K, and Himachal — everyone driving to Dharamshala, Dalhousie, or Jammu passes through, and the railway junction is where the toy train to Kangra begins. On its own the city is functional rather than beautiful, but if you’re routing through it makes a sensible overnight stop rather than pushing on tired to the hills. Ranjit Sagar Dam is 30 minutes away and genuinely scenic; the Mukteshwar Temple has a real cave shrine.
By 9pm Dhangu Road and the main market are winding down but truck-stop dhabas on the highway stay open past midnight — the strip toward Jammu has some of the best mutton in Punjab. Skip: expecting monuments or heritage — this is a working border town. Suits: overnight before Dharamshala/Dalhousie, army families, train changers. Skip if you’re on a pure Punjab itinerary that doesn’t include the hills — no reason to route via here.
Dhangu Road and the area around the railway junction have mid-range hotels $35-70 — Cliff Top Club and Country Inn are the reliables. The highway strip toward the hills (Chakki Bank side) has newer options $45-80 with easier parking. Budget hotels near the bus stand from $18 but noisy. Avoid the very cheap lodges around the railway platforms — mostly transit traffic. Nothing luxury exists — head to Dharamshala or Amritsar if you need that.

Getting around Pathankot
Pathankot Airport (Punjab side, 8km) has limited flights — most fly into Amritsar (105km) or Jammu (100km) then taxi. Pathankot Junction is a major railway node — Delhi 8-10 hours ~$14, Amritsar 3 hours ~$6. Pathankot Cantt station is a separate stop, 5km from Junction, used by some Jammu-bound trains. Autos inside town $1-3. Taxis to Dharamshala $30-45, to Dalhousie $35-50, negotiate at the taxi stand near the junction.
Questions about Pathankot
Yes if you’re coming by train — Pathankot Junction to Dharamshala is 90km, 2.5 hours by taxi. The toy train from Pathankot to Kangra (6-8 hours) is scenic but slow. If you’re driving from Delhi, going via Chandigarh-Kiratpur is faster. From Amritsar, definitely route through Pathankot.
For tourists, completely safe. It's an army cantonment with heavy security. The 2016 airbase incident was an anomaly, not a pattern. Standard precautions apply — don’t photograph military installations, don’t wander into restricted zones, keep ID with you. Locals are used to travelers passing through.
