Why people stay in Hoshiarpur
Hoshiarpur is deep Doaba territory — the region between the Beas and Sutlej with the highest rate of foreign emigration in Punjab. Half the families in town have relatives in Southall, Vancouver, or Melbourne, and it shows in the huge houses, gyms, and driving schools that dot the outer sectors. The city itself is small but the district is beautiful — Kandi belt foothills, mango orchards around Talwara, and the Shivalik base for trekking. The Sohan Singh Josh museum is worth an hour.
By 9pm Kamalpur Chowk and Jail Road markets are done, but the newer restaurants along the Jalandhar bypass (Haveli, Kesar Da Dhaba) stay busy. Skip: expecting Amritsar-scale sights. Suits: Punjabi diaspora tracing roots, foothills travelers heading toward Una and Anandpur, mango season visitors (June-July). Skip if you’re on a short Punjab trip — Hoshiarpur is better as a base for Talwara-Anandpur than as a destination itself.
Jalandhar Road and the bypass have the main hotels, $30-55 — nothing luxury, all functional. Kamalpur and Model Town have mid-range guesthouses $25-45. Budget hotels near the bus stand from $15 but noisy. For the district's real appeal, consider staying at farm homestays in Talwara (30km) — mango orchard stays $40-70 in season. Avoid old-city lodges unless you specifically need to be near Jail Road markets.

Getting around Hoshiarpur
No airport — nearest is Amritsar (110km, taxi $40) or Chandigarh (150km). Hoshiarpur railway station connects to Jalandhar (1 hour ~$3) with onward Shatabdi to Delhi. Regular buses from Jalandhar ISBT ($1) run every 20 minutes. Inside town, autos $1-2 for most trips. For district trips (Talwara, Chintpurni) hire a taxi for the day, $30-45.

Tarkashi is a 200-year-old craft where thin strips of brass, camel bone, or ivory (now synthetic) are inlaid into shisham wood. Jail Road workshops behind the courts are the source. A quality jewelry box runs $20-40, small chess sets $50-100. Bargain moderately — the craftsmen are honest.
It's fine as a base for Talwara, Chintpurni, and Anandpur Sahib — all within 60km. But if you’re going deeper into Himachal (Dharamshala, Dalhousie), Pathankot is a better base. Hoshiarpur works best as a 1-night stop combining diaspora heritage with a Chintpurni or mango orchard day trip.
