The city itself is compact — Nakodar Road, Model Town, and GT Karnal Road cover 90% of what matters. The Devi Talab Mandir near the old bus stand is a real Hindu pilgrimage site, not a tourist add-on.
By 9pm Model Town main market is buzzing — Haveli restaurant on the bypass is packed, Lovely Sweets on Model Town Road is doing hot jalebis, and the wedding season (November-February) turns every second banquet hall into a light show. Skip: the industrial belt on Kapurthala Road unless you’re buying wholesale. Suits: sports-goods shoppers, people visiting family, food travelers. Skip if you’re chasing monuments — Jalandhar's history is here but not marketed.
GT Karnal Road (the bypass) has the newer business hotels, $50-95, with easy highway access to Amritsar and Ludhiana. Model Town and Ranjit Nagar have quieter mid-range options $40-70. Budget hotels cluster near the railway station on Bus Stand Road from $20 — functional but nothing special. Haveli on the bypass has attached rooms and is a decent one-night stop if you’re driving through. Avoid the very cheap places in Basti Sheikh — mostly serve day-labour, not travelers.

Adampur airport (18km) has limited flights; most fly into Amritsar (75km, taxi $30) or Chandigarh (150km). Jalandhar City railway station is on the Delhi-Amritsar mainline — Shatabdi to Delhi 4.5 hours ~$12, Amritsar 1.5 hours ~$6. Inside the city autos run $1-3 for most trips, Ola/Uber both work. The city is spread out; walking between markets is fine but between neighborhoods you’ll want an auto.
