Why people stay in Ludhiana
Ludhiana is not pretty and doesn’t pretend to be. It's Punjab's industrial engine — Hero cycles, Vardhman yarn, Avon bikes, all made here — and the city runs on business travel. The reason to come as a tourist is food and the Punjabi Agricultural University campus, which is genuinely lovely and free. Ferozepur Road is the main artery; everything you need sits within 3km of it. Malls (MBD Neopolis, Pavilion) are modern and air-conditioned, which matters in a June where it hits 45°C.
By 9pm the industrial areas are dead but Model Town and Sarabha Nagar are just warming up — restaurants like Gopal Sweets, Pal Dhaba, and Ranjit Da Dhaba stay busy until midnight. Skip: the crowded old city near the clock tower unless you’re specifically shopping for hosiery wholesale. Suits: business travelers, transit stopovers between Delhi and Amritsar, people who came for the food. Skip if you’re chasing heritage — this is a working city, not a museum.
Ferozepur Road between Bharat Nagar Chowk and Model Town has the bulk of business hotels, $50-120, with reliable service. Sarabha Nagar and Model Town Extension have quieter boutique places around $60-90. Budget travelers should look at the area around the railway station on Gill Road — hotels from $22, but noisy and dated. Avoid Chaura Bazaar and the old city for accommodation; too congested, poor parking, no reason to be there overnight.

Ludhiana has no commercial airport — nearest is Chandigarh (100km, 2 hours by taxi ~$45) or Amritsar (140km). The railway station on Gill Road is a major junction: Shatabdi to Delhi ~$12, 5 hours; Amritsar 2 hours ~$8. Inside the city, autos are cheap ($1-2 for most trips) but insist on meter or agree first. Ola/Uber work well. Avoid driving yourself — Ludhiana traffic is famously aggressive.

For one night, yes, mainly for the food and if you want to break the drive. The Shatabdi from Delhi arrives around 11am, giving you an afternoon and evening. Two nights is too many unless you have business here or family.
Chaura Bazaar has the wholesale range but it's chaotic. For a curated selection with fixed prices, try Phulkari by Meenu at Sarabha Nagar market or the emporium at PAU. Expect $8-15 for a decent pair of jutti, $25-60 for phulkari dupattas.
