Why people stay in Mohali
Mohali (officially Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar) is the IT and cricket suburb of Chandigarh — you cross an invisible line and suddenly the sectors are numbered again and the roads widen. The PCA (Punjab Cricket Association) stadium hosts internationals; Quark City and IT Park hold the tech companies. It's not a tourist destination per se, but it's where you actually stay if you’re doing business in the tri-city, and the hotels are noticeably cheaper than central Chandigarh for the same quality.
By 9pm Sector 70 and Phase 3B2 markets are buzzing — Backpacker's Cafe, Whistling Duck, and the strip along the North Country Mall stay open past midnight. Cricket days pack the entire city. Skip: the older phases (1-5) unless you have a specific address. Suits: business travelers, tech workers on assignment, cricket fans, transit stopovers before flights out of Chandigarh. Skip if you wanted authentic Punjab — Mohali is deliberately new.
The city itself is barely fifty years old in its current form — Mohali only took its official name, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, in 2006, and GMADA (the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority) has kept building sectors outward ever since, which is why Sector 108 and 109 feel half-finished with plot after plot still fenced off. The core sectors — 61 through 71 — are the ones with functioning infrastructure: parks, working streetlights, and a market every few blocks. Anything above Sector 90 is still catching up, so check exactly which sector a hotel listing quotes before booking.
Aerocity, the newer commercial strip near the airport on the Chandigarh-Kharar road, has pulled some of the IT Park's overflow — glass-fronted offices, a scatter of quick-service chains, and hotel construction still going up. It's convenient but soulless after dark; there's nowhere to walk to. Compare that to Sector 61's market in Phase 7, which has an actual evening crowd of families and shopkeepers. If you need a 6am airport run, Aerocity wins on distance; if you want dinner within walking distance, pick Phase 7 or Sector 70 instead.
Sector 70 and Airport Road (Phase 8/9) have the newer business hotels, ₹4,500-9,000, including Radisson, Hyatt, and JW Marriott. Phase 5 and Phase 3B2 have mid-range at ₹3,700-6,200 with restaurants nearby. Airport Road hotels are 5 minutes from the airport — best if you have an early flight. Avoid the industrial area (Phase 7, 8A) hotels — they exist for factory contractors, no restaurants nearby. High season (October to March, plus any week the PCA stadium has a match) pushes Sector 70 rates toward the top of that band and sometimes past it — book two weeks ahead for a Test match week. Low season (May-July heat) can drop the same rooms by fifteen percent. Phase 11 and Sector 76, further from the airport, run cheaper again — ₹2,800-4,500 — but you’ll lean on Ola/Uber for everything since there's no walkable market. Overall Mohali is 20-30% cheaper than same-tier hotels in Chandigarh Sector 17: book Sector 70 for convenience, Phase 3B2 if the budget is tighter.
Things to do in Mohali
The IS Bindra PCA Stadium at Sector 63 offers tours on non-match days — ₹300 entry, book at the ticket window. Match tickets ₹800-4,000 depending on the tie. India internationals sell out in hours.
Biggest mall in the tri-city on Kharar-Landran Road, actually well-designed with a rooftop food court. Nando's, Yauatcha, and BrewMaster are the standouts, and a meal for two runs ₹600-1,200 depending on where you sit. Open 10am-11pm, weekend evenings get genuinely crowded by 8pm.
Nek Chand's Rock Garden is technically in Chandigarh Sector 1, 20 minutes from most Mohali hotels — auto ₹300. ₹50 entry, open 9am-1pm and 2pm-6pm. One of the strangest and most wonderful public spaces in India.
Historical gurdwara at Phase 8, Sector 62. Free, open 4am-10pm. Langar served throughout the day. The architecture is modern-Sikh, less crowded than Chandigarh gurdwaras, and the marble courtyard is a genuinely peaceful stop between meetings.
Punjab's biodiversity park sits off the Sector 68 roundabout, a quiet green loop with a small lake and native tree plantings — ₹20 entry, open 6am-8pm. Good for an early morning walk before the heat, popular with local joggers rather than tourists.
Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park (Chhatbir Zoo) is about 25 minutes south on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway — ₹40 entry, ₹20 for the toy train inside, open 9am-5pm, closed Mondays. Better for families with kids than solo travellers; the lion and tiger enclosures are the draw.

Getting around Mohali
Chandigarh International Airport is technically in Mohali — 8km from most sectors, taxi ₹500-800, 15-20 minutes depending on traffic on the Airport Road flyover. Mohali doesn’t have its own train station; Chandigarh Junction (12km) or Ghaggar station is used, both roughly ₹300 by taxi or ₹40 by shared auto to the ISBT first. Buses to Chandigarh Sector 17 run every 10 minutes from Phase 7 ISBT, ₹35, and take about 25 minutes. Inside Mohali autos are cheap (₹80-250) but Ola/Uber are more reliable — the sectors confuse auto drivers, and even locals give directions by landmark rather than sector number. Walking between adjacent sectors is fine, 10-15 minutes; anything further, take a cab.
Questions about Mohali
Administratively no — Mohali is in Punjab state, Chandigarh is a Union Territory. Practically, they merge without a visible border — you can walk from Chandigarh Sector 43 to Mohali Phase 1 without noticing. Same taxis operate, same phone codes. Hotels in Mohali are usually cheaper for the same tier.
Mohali if you’re flying in/out — the airport is here. Sector 17 if you want walkable restaurants and shopping in one place. Business travelers usually prefer Mohali Sector 70 or Airport Road for newer hotels at 20-30% less. Cricket fans should stay in Sector 63 near the stadium.
Sector 63, right by the IS Bindra PCA Stadium, is the obvious choice — you can walk to the ground on match day and skip the traffic snarl on Airport Road. Expect a premium of 20-40% over normal rates during a Test or IPL week, and book at least two weeks ahead. Sector 70, ten minutes away by auto, is the fallback once Sector 63 hotels sell out.
Not really as a standalone destination — there are no historic monuments or old-city quarter here, and most travellers use it as a base for Chandigarh and the Rock Garden rather than a sight in itself. If you’re passing through for the airport, an evening at North Country Mall or Phase 5 market is enough to get a feel for it. Cricket fans and business travelers are the two groups it genuinely rewards.
