Where to stay in Jalandhar
Jalandhar's Model Town streets with mature trees and residential hotels
Punjab's third city has six real hotel areas, and picking the wrong one adds ₹400 in daily autos to a trip that should cost ₹4,500.
GT Road and the highway hotels
Jalandhar sits on NH1, and the GT Road corridor from Jyoti Chowk to the Bypass Chowk holds most of the city's four-star inventory: Radisson Jalandhar, Country Inn Hoshiarpur Road, Ramada Encore, and the older Hotel Ramada. Rooms run ₹3,800 to ₹7,500. You are on the highway, which means fast in and out to Ludhiana, Amritsar, or the Beas River, and slow anywhere within the city itself.
Book here if your Jalandhar trip is really a Doaba trip — visiting relatives in villages between Phagwara and Kartarpur, or on your way to Dera Baba Nanak for the corridor to Kartarpur Sahib. Skip if your business is in the old city or Model Town. GT Road traffic in the evening turns a five-kilometre trip into thirty-five minutes, and the highway hotels do not have the walking neighbourhood that makes an evening enjoyable.
Model Town and Urban Estate
Model Town, laid out in the 1960s, is Jalandhar's most liveable neighbourhood and where most business travellers actually prefer to sleep. Hotels like Country Inn & Suites, Hotel President and boutique guesthouses in Urban Estate Phase 1 run ₹3,500 to ₹6,000. The streets are wide, the trees are grown, and Model Town Market has the sit-down restaurants — Mama's Grill, Haveli, and the branch of Kesar Kulfi — that make dinner easy.
This is the pick for a second visit, for wedding guests, and for anyone with children. Autos to the railway station cost ₹120 and take fifteen minutes. The one weakness is that Model Town has few properly branded four-stars; if you need a Marriott points stay, you are back on GT Road. Otherwise, this is the value sweet spot in the city — quieter than the highway, cheaper than Chandigarh Road properties, better food within walking distance.
Nakodar Road and the sports-goods belt
Nakodar Road, running southwest, is where the leather and sports-goods factories cluster. Hotels here — Hotel Skylark, a few mid-range guesthouses — run ₹2,800 to ₹4,500. If your trip involves cricket-bat manufacturers, hockey-stick exporters, or the surgical-instruments cluster, this puts you within a ten-minute drive of the factories and avoids a cross-city commute.
For any other visitor, it is a poor choice. The road itself is industrial, evening food options are limited to two decent dhabas, and cabs are slow to arrive after 9pm. Book here only if the client is specific about location, and even then consider staying in Model Town and accepting the fifteen-minute drive. The difference in room quality between Nakodar Road and Model Town at the same price band is substantial.
Civil Lines and the older bungalows
Civil Lines, behind the courts and near the Company Bagh, has a small stock of colonial-era bungalows converted to guesthouses. Rooms run ₹2,200 to ₹3,800. Some of these are genuinely lovely — high ceilings, verandas, jamun trees — and some are tired. Ask for photos taken in the last six months before booking.
This suits solo travellers, writers, and anyone doing court work at the district complex. It does not suit families needing a pool, or anyone requiring modern hotel service standards. There is no room service in the branded sense; there is a cook who will make you dal and roti at 8pm if you ask by 6pm. If that trade sounds appealing, Civil Lines is charming. If it sounds like a hassle, book Model Town.
Jyoti Chowk and the transit strip
Jyoti Chowk, where GT Road meets the road to the railway station, is Jalandhar's transit hub. Budget hotels — Hotel Prakash, several OYOs, a few older independent properties — run ₹1,500 to ₹3,000. Rooms are basic, the area is loud, and the eating is street-food quality rather than sit-down.
Book here for one specific reason: an early train the next morning. Jalandhar City station and Jalandhar Cantt are both under ten minutes by auto. If your trip is a single night before a 5:45am departure, this saves ₹1,500 versus Model Town and costs you nothing you would use anyway. For any longer stay, or for anyone travelling with a partner who values comfort, this belt is a false economy.
Kapurthala Road and the outer developments
Kapurthala Road, heading west toward Kapurthala town, has picked up a few newer four-star projects in the last three years. Hyatt-adjacent boutique properties and a Sarovar branded hotel run ₹4,500 to ₹7,500. The road is wide, the surroundings semi-rural, and the drive to the old city is twenty minutes off-peak.
This works for destination weddings using farms along the same road, and for travellers combining Jalandhar with a day trip to Kapurthala's palaces. Not a good fit for someone whose actual business is in Model Town or GT Road, because the daily drive back and forth eats an hour. Consider it if you specifically want a quieter, newer property and are willing to Ola everywhere.
What a night costs, and the verdict
Jalandhar is roughly ten percent cheaper than Ludhiana and twenty-five percent cheaper than Chandigarh. Cheapest honest bed: ₹1,500 at a Jyoti Chowk OYO. Mid-range sweet spot: ₹4,000 at Country Inn Model Town. Top of the market: ₹7,500 at Radisson Jalandhar during wedding season, less off-season.
For a first visit, Model Town. For business east or south of the city, GT Road. For transit only, Jyoti Chowk for one night. Jalandhar is a working Doaba city — nobody comes here for tourism, everyone comes for family, business, or the drive between Amritsar and Chandigarh. Book to your actual reason for being here, not to a hotel brand you recognise, and the city becomes efficient rather than frustrating.

What people ask before booking Amritsar.
Yes, if your interest is Doaba specifically — the belt between Beas and Sutlej. Kapurthala, Phagwara, Nakodar and Kartarpur corridor access are all closer from Jalandhar. Amritsar is a better base only if the Golden Temple and Wagah are your priority. For a mixed trip, one night each.
About 150 kilometres, three hours on a good day via NH1, closer to four in Diwali or wedding-season traffic. Amritsar airport at 90 kilometres is faster and often cheaper for domestic flights. Book Chandigarh only for international connections or when Amritsar has no availability.
Model Town, without hesitation. It is central to most wedding venues around the city, the food is walkable for late-night hunger, and cabs to any farm venue on the outskirts take twenty to thirty minutes. Book at least three weeks ahead in November and December wedding peak.
