Getting there and back

From Amritsar, the 05:00 Shatabdi Express (12013) reaches Chandigarh by 09:35 for around $12 in AC Chair Car. Return on the 18:23 (12014) to be back by 23:00. From Ludhiana, the same trains take 2 hours 15 minutes and cost $8. Buses via Punjab Roadways cost $6 but the drive on the Amritsar-Ludhiana-Chandigarh corridor is 5 hours minimum. Flying makes sense only from Amritsar — the 55-minute Air India hop is around $60.

The essential 3

Start with the Rock Garden in Sector 1 (entry $0.50, closes 6pm), Nek Chand's 40-acre sculpture park made from industrial waste and broken bangles — allow 90 minutes. Walk 10 minutes to Sukhna Lake for a chai and paddleboat ($2). Afternoon: the Le Corbusier Capitol Complex tour leaves the Tourism office in Sector 1 at 10am and 3pm daily — free with passport, 90 minutes, covers the High Court, Secretariat and Open Hand monument.

Eat and shop

Lunch at Pal Dhaba, Sector 28, is the local move — butter chicken $5, dal makhani $3, kulchas $1. If you want AC and a proper menu, Sagar Ratna in Sector 17 does South Indian thalis at $6. Sector 17 plaza is the retail heart — Fabindia for kurtas, Khadi Gramodyog for oils and soaps, Cotton County for shirts. Skip the Elante Mall unless you need Zara. Book a return cab to the station 40 minutes before departure; Chandigarh evening traffic bites.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is Chandigarh worth a day trip from Amritsar?

Yes if you can catch the Shatabdi both ways — otherwise you’ll spend more time on the road than in the city. Two nights is better if your schedule allows.

How do I visit the Capitol Complex?

Free guided tours at 10am and 3pm from the Tourism office at UT Guest House, Sector 6. Bring your passport; no bookings, first-come.

Is the Rock Garden overrated?

No — it's genuinely unlike anything else in India. Skip the newer sections and focus on Phase 1 and 2, which are Nek Chand's original work.

Can I combine Chandigarh with Pinjore Gardens?

Yes if you have a car. Pinjore Gardens is 22km north, a Mughal-era terraced garden — add 90 minutes for a full visit.
