Getting there
Drive from Chandigarh in 2 hours via NH5, or from Ambala in 2 hours 30 minutes. There's no direct train — the toy train from Kalka goes to Shimla, not Kasauli. Book a private cab in Chandigarh for around $50 return with driver waiting. Public option: HRTC bus from Chandigarh ISBT to Dharampur ($3) then a shared jeep the final 10km. Roads are decent but hairpin from Parwanoo up; not for the queasy. Best April-June and October-November; monsoon brings landslides.
What to actually do
Kasauli is not about sightseeing — it's about walking. The Upper Mall and Lower Mall loop takes 90 minutes through pine and oak. Christ Church, built in 1853, is worth a look for the neo-Gothic stained glass. Monkey Point (a 4km walk from town) requires a cantonment ID check for foreigners and closes at 5pm — the summit has a small Hanuman temple and a genuinely spectacular view down to the plains. Sunset Point off the Gilbert Trail is another easy walk for the golden-hour view.
Eat and drink
Lunch at Ros Common, the old Himachal Tourism heritage bungalow — Continental and Indian mains around $8. Coffee at Kasauli Club is members-only, but the newer Cafe Rudra on Lower Mall has decent filter coffee and pizza around $6. Kasauli Brewery, one of India's oldest distilleries (1855), doesn’t do public tours but you can buy their Solan No.1 whisky in town for $6 a bottle. Drive back before dark; the descent in headlights is not fun.
