Trains: the smart backbone

The New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express (12013/12014) is Punjab's spine, stopping at Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. AC Chair Car is $12-15 depending on distance and books out 5-10 days ahead. Book through IRCTC.co.in with a foreign traveller account or via 12go.asia for a small surcharge. For overnight, the Golden Temple Mail from Mumbai reaches Amritsar via Delhi. Chandigarh has its own line — the Kalka Shatabdi from Delhi covers it in 3 hours 20 minutes. Punjab's stations are clean, safe, and English-signposted.

Buses: cheaper, slower, everywhere

Punjab Roadways and PEPSU run the state fleet. Volvo AC buses cover Amritsar-Chandigarh in 5.5 hours for $12 — hourly departures from ISBT-43 in Chandigarh and the main bus stand in Amritsar. Ordinary non-AC buses cost $6 and take 30 minutes longer. For rural towns like Anandpur Sahib, Kapurthala or Tarn Taran, buses are the only public option. Book on the RedBus app or just show up 20 minutes before departure. Overnight sleeper Volvos to Delhi and Katra are reliable; skip private overnight operators.

Cabs, autos, and self-drive

Ola and Uber both work in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Chandigarh. In smaller towns, use pre-paid autos or ask your hotel to arrange a driver. A car with driver for intercity trips runs $50-65 a day including fuel and driver's food, arranged through your hotel or Savaari. Self-drive rentals (Zoomcar) are available in Chandigarh from $35 a day but Indian road habits punish inexperience — a driver is the practical call. Toll charges apply on all expressways; keep $10 in $2 notes handy.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is the train from Delhi to Amritsar worth it?

Yes — the 06:10 Shatabdi (12029) reaches Amritsar at 12:30 in AC Chair Car for around $18, and beats flying door-to-door once you factor in airport time.

How do I book Indian trains as a foreigner?

Register on IRCTC with your passport, or pay a $2 surcharge on 12go.asia for a simpler interface. Tatkal (emergency) bookings open 24 hours before departure at 10am and 11am.

Are Ola and Uber reliable in Punjab?

Yes in the big 3 cities. Coverage is patchy in Patiala and rural areas — fall back to autos or pre-paid taxi stands at bus and train stations.

Do I need to learn any Punjabi to get around?

No — English and Hindi work with drivers, hotel staff and shopkeepers. Learning 'sat sri akal' (hello) and 'shukriya' (thanks) earns immediate warmth.
