Cash, cards, and UPI
Cards work at hotels, mid-range restaurants, malls and petrol pumps. Dhabas, autos, markets and small shops are cash or UPI (India's instant-payment app). Foreigners can’t easily set up UPI without an Indian bank account, so cash remains essential. Withdraw from HDFC, ICICI or SBI ATMs — most charge $3-4 per foreign card transaction with a $250-300 per withdrawal limit. Airport ATMs work but have poor rates on dynamic conversion — always choose 'debit in local currency'. Keep small notes; nobody breaks a $12 bill for a $0.60 auto ride.

Realistic per-day budgets: backpacker $30 (dorm, dhaba meals, buses), mid-range $80 (3-star hotel, restaurant lunches, occasional cab), comfortable $200-250 (4-star hotel, private car, sit-down dinners). Sample prices: cycle rickshaw $0.60, auto in Amritsar $1.50-3, dhaba thali $3, mid-range dinner $12, Volvo bus Amritsar-Chandigarh $12, Shatabdi AC Chair $12-15, entry to Qila Mubarak $0.60. Tipping and bargaining
Restaurants: 5-10% if service charge isn’t included, round up at dhabas. Hotel porters: $1 per bag. Housekeeping: $1-2 a day. Guides: $8-10 for a half-day. Auto drivers: no tip expected but round up. Bargaining is expected in bazaars (Adalat, Hall Bazaar, Sector 17 shops-not-brands) — start at 40% of the asking price, settle around 60%. Never bargain in fixed-price shops (Fabindia, Khadi Gramodyog) or restaurants. Uber and Ola prices are metered, no negotiation.
