Chandigarh: the party sectors

Sector 26 is the nightlife strip. Kitty Su at the Lalit hotel runs late-night house and hip-hop (cover ₹1,000-1,250, cocktails ₹650-850), and remains the state's only proper club. Peddlers in Sector 35 is the live music venue — Delhi bands play Fridays and Saturdays, cover ₹500, cocktails ₹580. Backpackers Cafe in Sector 9 is a mid-range option with rooftop seating and student prices. Sector 17's shops close by 10pm but the newer places like Antidote in Sector 26 stay open until 1am on weekends.

If you're staying near the airport rather than the city centre, the hotel bars in Zirakpur cover the same ground with less queueing. Radisson Chandigarh Zirakpur and Orchid Hotel Chandigarh Zirakpur both run in-house bars until around midnight, a 20-25 minute drive from Sector 26 on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, useful if you've got an early flight the next morning. Excise rules mean nowhere in Chandigarh legally pours past 1am, so don't plan a night that starts after 11pm. Weekend cover charges at Kitty Su often come with a couples-only or stag-limited door policy after 9pm — call ahead if you're a group of men.

Amritsar: quieter than you’d expect

Amritsar is a pilgrim city and most restaurants close by 11pm. The exceptions are hotel bars — The Lounge at Hyatt Regency Amritsar Hotel & Spa, Zephyr at Ista, and 210 Rooftop Lounge at the Ramada Amritsar. Cocktails run ₹650-850, city view included. The Beer Cafe on Ranjit Avenue does 20+ beers on tap and stays open until midnight. Skip anywhere calling itself a 'discotheque' outside a hotel — the scene isn’t there and you’ll get overpriced whisky and confused music.

Other five-star bars worth knowing: the lobby bar at Taj Swarna Amritsar and the lounge at Le Méridien Amritsar both pour proper cocktails from around ₹700, and Radisson Blu Hotel Amritsar and Courtyard by Marriott Amritsar have quieter bars if you just want a beer after the Golden Temple's evening Palki Sahib ceremony. Nothing in Amritsar runs past midnight, and the streets around the Golden Temple itself are effectively dry and pedestrian-only after dark — plan your drinking for Ranjit Avenue or Mall Road, a 10-15 minute auto ride from the shrine.

The dry-day trap and cultural bars

Punjab observes several dry days each month (state elections, national holidays, Baisakhi, Gandhi Jayanti) when bars close statewide. Check dates before planning a big night. For a more atmospheric drink, the bar at Baradari Palace in Patiala is in the former royal Durbar Hall — cocktails ₹500, single malts ₹650, and you can order a proper Patiala peg. Jugaadus Ecohostel in Amritsar runs open-mic nights on Wednesdays that pull in a young Punjabi crowd — beer ₹250, music genuinely decent.

Patiala has a second heritage option: Ran Bass The Palace Hotel Patiala keeps a small bar inside its old palace grounds, less polished than Baradari but cheaper, and a good stop if you're already touring Qila Mubarak during the day. Expect around 10-12 dry days a year in a normal calendar, more if state or national elections fall in that year — election-season trips should always have a backup dry-day plan. If a bar or hotel restaurant looks closed with shutters half-down on a date you didn't flag, it's almost certainly a dry day rather than a random closure.

Ludhiana and Jalandhar: industrial-city drinking

Neither city is a nightlife destination, but both have serviceable hotel bars for a work trip or a stopover. Radisson Blu Hotel Ludhiana runs a bar that stays open until around midnight with cocktails from ₹650, and Nirvana Luxury Hotel Ludhiana has a quieter lounge better suited to a couple of drinks after a late dinner. In Jalandhar, Radisson Hotel Jalandhar is the reliable option — same closing time, same price band, and the only place in the city centre with a proper cocktail list rather than just beer and whisky.

Skip the standalone bars advertised on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway that promise live DJs; they're aimed at wedding parties and the music is a wall of remixes with no real crowd on a normal weeknight. If you're passing through either city on the Delhi-Amritsar route and want an actual night out, it's a better call to push on to Chandigarh (under two hours from Ludhiana) than to settle for what's on offer locally.

Getting home safely

Ola and Uber both operate reliably in Chandigarh, with wait times of 5-10 minutes even after midnight around Sector 26 and Sector 35. Amritsar's app-based cab coverage is patchier — expect to wait 15-20 minutes late at night, or arrange a hotel pickup in advance, which most of the properties on Ranjit Avenue and Mall Road will do for a fixed fare of around ₹200-300. Autos are cheap and everywhere in both cities but agree the fare before getting in; meters are rarely used after dark.

Solo women travelling late at night are generally fine sticking to hotel bars and pre-booked cabs in both cities, and less so relying on street-hailed autos after midnight — the standard local advice is to have the hotel call a cab rather than flag one down. Ludhiana and Jalandhar have far less cab density than Chandigarh, so if you're out at a hotel bar there, ask the front desk to book your return trip before you start drinking, not after.

Dress code, door policy and the drinking age

Punjab's legal drinking age is 25, and IDs are checked at the door of every club and most hotel bars — carry a physical passport or driving licence, not just a photo of one. Dress codes at Kitty Su and Peddlers lean smart-casual: collared shirts and closed shoes for men, no strict rule for women but flip-flops and gym wear will get you turned away. Hotel bars in Amritsar and the smaller cities are far more relaxed and rarely enforce anything beyond basic decency.

Groups of unaccompanied men should expect scrutiny or outright refusal at Chandigarh's clubs on weekend nights, a common door policy across North Indian cities rather than something specific to Punjab. It rarely applies to hotel bars, which is one more reason the Taj Swarna, Radisson Blu and Le Méridien properties in Amritsar are the easier, if quieter, option if you're travelling as a same-sex group of friends rather than a couple.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is Amritsar boring at night?

Not boring, just religious rather than raucous — the Golden Temple at night is the main attraction. For bars and clubs, Chandigarh delivers more.

What are dry days in Punjab?

Days when alcohol sales are banned statewide — usually national and state election days, Gandhi Jayanti (2 October), and major religious festivals like Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Is there LGBTQ+ nightlife in Punjab?

No dedicated venues, but Kitty Su in Chandigarh and Peddlers are broadly welcoming. India decriminalised same-sex relationships in 2018; public displays remain uncommon.

Can I drink at Sikh gurdwaras' surrounding restaurants?

No — restaurants within 500m of major gurdwaras don’t serve alcohol. Walk to hotels on Mall Road or Ranjit Avenue for a drink.

What's the legal drinking age in Punjab?

It's 25, higher than most Indian states. Clubs and hotel bars check ID at the door, so carry a passport or driving licence, not a phone photo of one.

Do I need to book ahead for Kitty Su or Peddlers on a weekend?

Yes, especially Kitty Su — tables fill up by 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. A quick call or a message through the hotel front desk usually secures a spot; walk-ins risk being turned away once the room is at capacity.
