What to expect at Devi Talab Mandir
Devi Talab is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the subcontinent, marking the spot where — in Hindu tradition — the right breast of the goddess Sati fell as Shiva carried her body. The presiding deity is Tripurmalini, a form of Durga, and the temple has been rebuilt several times over the past two centuries around a large tank (talab) from which it takes its name. A cave temple in the complex replicates the Amarnath ice-lingam and is remarkably atmospheric.
The temple sits in the heart of old Jalandhar, ten minutes' walk from the railway station. During Sharad Navratri (October) the entire neighbourhood is illuminated and hosts one of northern Punjab's biggest annual religious fairs. Outside Navratri it is calm even during weekday evenings. Enter via the ornate main gate on the east, deposit shoes, walk clockwise around the tank, then enter the cave temple through the low doorway on the south side.
