What to expect at Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Shaheed (Shaheed Ganj)
Baba Deep Singh, the head of the Damdami Taksal and a legendary Sikh warrior-scholar, fell mortally wounded in 1757 while defending Harmandir Sahib from Afghan invader Jahan Khan. Sikh tradition holds that he continued to fight with his severed head in one hand and his 32-kilogram khanda in the other, finally collapsing at the very edge of the Golden Temple parikrama. This gurdwara — Shaheed Ganj — marks the spot where he made his final vow to reach the temple.
The shrine is a short walk south of the Golden Temple's main complex, easily included in the same visit. A large mural inside depicts the martyrdom, and the original khanda used by Baba Deep Singh is preserved in a glass case. The site is particularly powerful on 13 November, his martyrdom anniversary (Shaheedi Diwas), when thousands of Nihangs process from here to the Harmandir. On ordinary days it is contemplative and uncrowded.
